Although it is not one of the larger towns of the province of\u00a0<a title=\"Selino\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Selino\" target=\"_blank\">Selino<\/a>, Sougia is interesting to the tourist, providing a beach, walkways, mountains and interesting remains of an ancient city and old\u00a0<a title=\"Byzantine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Byzantine\" target=\"_blank\">Byzantine<\/a>\u00a0churches. Sougia has some tourist services, such as small hotels, rooms to rent and a few taverns, cafes and bars. Sougia was the ancient city of\u00a0<a title=\"Syia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syia\" target=\"_blank\">Syia<\/a>, a harbour of\u00a0<a title=\"Elyros\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elyros\" target=\"_blank\">Elyros<\/a>. In the village church, an important basilica of the Byzantine era, was found a beautiful mosaic, now exposed in Chania&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Chania Archaeological Museum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chania_Archaeological_Museum\" target=\"_blank\">Archeological Museum<\/a>. In 1943, during German occupation, Germans razed the villages Livadas, Moni and Koustogerako, by way of reprisal for local partisan actions.
